The Evolution of Jewish Thinking: Rashi, Maimonides, and the Kabbalists
Class starts Wednesday evening September 25 at 7:30 pm. We will have nine sessions.
We will examine seminal Jewish writers who influenced the development of Jewish
life from the Sephardic and Ashkenazic cultures. Rashi was the most important
Bible commentator of the eleventh century, and his writings influenced all of
Torah scholarship for the next seven hundred years. Maimonides was the most
important philosopher of his day, influencing the Arabic and Christian worlds
of thinking. We will segue to some of the noted Kabbalists of the sixteenth
century, to understand how they changed Jewish thinking before the Enlightenment.
Biblical Hebrew class will continue on Tuesday afternoons at 1:30 pm. We are
studying passages from the book of Genesis.
Shabbat morning Torah study will commence in mid September, after the
High Holiday season. We will meet at 9 am. at Beit Tikva. More details on the
weekly Torah “parashah” class will be noted during the Holy Day services.
